Gymnogyps californianus
June 5, 1950.
Berkeley, Calif.
Bass Welch, game warden at Porterville, phoned long
distance to tell me of a reported condor nest in the
northeastern part of Tuole Indian Recreation near
Mule Peak at the 6600 foot level. A man whom
he considered to be reliable had told him of a condor
which roosted was seen to leave that area daily
at about 3:30 p.m. The man had picked up cedar
feathers from beneath the tree and Welch had seen
them and was sure they were of condors. Welch was
going to try to visit the area and watch the bird. He
had seen 5 condors recently at same place he saw
12 last fall. Believe nest is in hole in redwood
tree - cavity similar to cave.
