Gymnogyps californianus
May 26, 1949
San Luis Obispo Co., Calif.,
passing over the lower canyons, without being seen — essentially no
condors present; no evidence of nesting. Nesting previous year,
an imm. might be seen in area. Dan McMillan says that
the 5 condors which Buch Kester (of Parleyfield) reported were
the first ever ever reported near due to his knowledge. This
indicates some change in the range of the birds. Kester was
a rider in Stone Canyon for years & never saw condors there
(about 1915-20 I don't think). Dan thinks Kester a most
reliable observer and me who pays attention to wildlife. Dan
does not regard reports of condors further N. in Matting Co.,
as infallible — even those by Dave Delcher. My belief is
that except for vagrants, condors now do not range
north of Castle Mountain.
