Gymnogyps californianus
August 22, 1948 Tejon Ranch, Kern Co.
297,000 acres. Of course much of this was leased to
people growing potatoes & cotton & drilling for oil. Some
of the wells near the ranch headquarters were producing
well; 4 more holes were in the process of drilling. Sprague
said he had seen 5 condors near the ranch house about
2 weeks ago.
Sept. 2, 1948 Berkeley, Calif.
Al Wool of San Jose called. He said he had been to
Happer Canyon Mar. 24 and again in May, up the
first occasion he saw up to 16 condors, mainly
roosting on "Grundell Ridge" in the Big Cave area.
He looked at #12 nest hole but saw no signs
of nesting. The May trip he saw only a few birds,
and little activity near "Big Cave", but about
6 p.m. he saw one descend to the #12 nest hole,
and there was whitewash there - probable nest.
Wool intended to take another trip to this spot in
October, he said. He saw no evidence of fox-
passing in this area.
December 29, 1948 Cholame, Calif.
(Elan McMillan)
Elen Mc Millan said that he and others saw 3
condors over the San Juan River near the foot of
Kelly Canyon on December 11 while quail hunting.
Two of the birds appeared to be dark immatures.
This was the first time that they had seen condors.
