August 16,1948 To Mr. Fillmore, Ventura Ca.
much lately but May 8 had seen up to 5 at once at
Hopper Rion, including adults & immatures, + figured
about 9 condors total there (some in Big Cove area). We
drove to Hopper Canyon & visited Eugene Percy. He & son
Stephensaw 3 condors a few days ago perched in 2 dead
big saw spruce in head of Wasiily Canyon. Water this year
is low in Hopper Creek (Dry at Cada Falls?).
August 17 & 18/1948 Hopper Ranch, Ventura Ca.
In 2 days at the ranch, not going into Wasiily
Canyon, we saw no condors. Weather clear + warm.
Aug. 22/1948 Tejon Ranch, Kern Ca.
At headquarters of Tejon Ranch, I saw 1 condor at
12:20 (daylight saving time). It approached from E. at
about 1000' altitude & headed toward the group of turkey
vultures at the trash dump 1/4 mile W. of the building.
Again at 1 p.m I saw 1 overhead (adult), & it bore
off to E. (toward Cummings Mts.?). At 2 p.m. I saw
2 adults heading NE from the same area at about
1000' altitude. I think the condors (2 or 3) were
attracted by the activity of the vultures. The condors
apparently did not land. Perry Sprague said he
saw 43 condors at once last November not far
from headquarters at a carcass. Cattle fed optimally
short this year though a normal number of cattle
were present. Sprague said that the ranch had
