Gymnogyps californianus August 15, 1948 Cholame Ranch, San Luis Obispo. A few turkey vultures soaring slowly & steadily, air- dicating low soarability of the air. I saw 50+ ravens, mainly perched on the ground, & 2 swanian hawks, riding. The hawks could easily be mistaken for condors by a novice because of the light buff area anterioly beneath the wings. The hawk wing is more point- [illegible] than the condors (or red-tailed hawks), + the tail is light colored. By 11:40 I had sighted no condors though I kept watch on Cholame Flat & Castle Mtn. Breezy nil to fair, warm, clear. August 16, 1948 To Cayoma Valley, S.B.C. May & I drove up Bettewater Valley to Finale. The [illegible] carcass at Els McMillan's had been burnt up, we saw no condors there about noon. We drove thru Carrizo Plains but saw no condors nor bands of sleep (may have missed them as the plains are large). Saw 500+ cattle on the plains, much wheat stubble, & much undeveloped land. We stopped at Cayoma Ranger Station and talked with Ranger Boyce & a guard (corssaint?); named Flynn. Flynn said that at Bega Peak about July 1 he saw 6 condors (1 evening & next morning). In flying, they "grunted like pigs" he said. This sound was apparently the sound of flapping from the way he described it, + he said it was what the wings were flapped (sound probably good - so occasional
