Gymnogyps californianus
June 7, 1946
Hopper Canyon, Calif.
Branch of a green Ps. 4 took off as other landed there; then the second took off as a third skimmed close by. Sky clear, air warm, faint breeze at least. 8:20, 7 condors perched on Drundell Ridge. Three on branches of a dead stub, two in top of a green Ps. 4
a third 50 t' away (about 100 yds. from stub) and one near Saddle Ps. as before. 8:23, 8 perched, one being added to the 3 in green trees. 8:25 - 11 perched, 3 in the tall dead Ps. where 3 seen about 8 a.m. 8:30, 5 were about 500' over Drundell Ridge, circling & rising. They apparently descended to ridge again - I saw 9 there at 8:34, 3 in air. One chased another 2 or 3 times in steep twisting dives. 8:38, 6 in air over Drundell Ridge. Much noont shifting - apparently more perched at same spot since 8 a.m. 8:42, 6 visible perched & 4 soaring 900' over Landstine Mesa. 8:49, I saw a possible min. Stop Flat Ps. with wings out giving gentle flaps as if legging while facing an adult. The adult took off & two landed - the possible min. repeated the performance for 3+ flaps. 8:57, 9 in air up to 1500' over Drundell Ridge awa, 41 perched at Stop Flat Ps. Shortly before, one hurriedly left Stop Flat Ps. as another flew close (10+) by. 9:05, two perched on Flat Ps. 4 at least 3 above Loirgin. Two of the 3 soared together, 4 one swooped after the other, both going nearly straight up, wings bowed, before falling off.
