Gymnogyps californianus August 13, 1948 Salinas Valley, Calif. Driving between King City and Paso Robles, I saw no cattle or other stock but much wheat. No canda food. At El McMillan's August 13, 1948 Nr. Cholame, San Luis Obispo Co. Talked with El McMillan at his home. He said that yesterday he saw 2 candra near the Rinde Ranch, and that candra had been seen there several times lately. El had lost 4 cattle from anthrax recently and the candra & turkey vultures fed on those. The candra seemed to show no fear of the ranch buildings or cars on the road, but flew quickly if a car came off the road toward them. El saw me go through the dust of a passing car in landing. This season he had seen seen only one candra which was surely a dark headed immature. One time he drove up on 12 or 15 in a ditch at a car- casa. The birds seemed to come from the direction of McCheaney Mtn. and disappear in the same direction. They usually arrived about 11 a.m. or noon. (A hired man at his ranch said that he saw one lunch at 11 a.m. recently). Lon McMillan said he thought there were few or no cattle at Cholame Flat. The animals were mostly shipped to Oregon
