Gymnogyps californianus February 18, 1948 Hopper Canyon, Ventura Co. Seven condors, 3 or + imm., present (minimum). 11:00, 3 circling over Rim at head of Hopper Canyon, 3 others over Parking Knoll (I chased another several times), + 2 separate perched adults still - so a minimum of 3 condors. Breeze light, sky overcast. 11:13, 2 min., under wing patches △, circled slowly 500+ ' above Rim near 1.0. No apparent feather gaps - very perfect plumage - and both soared well (over 1 yr. old). A single turkey vulture, first seen today, soared near them. The 2 followed vulture about ½ mile 5.4 leader down slightly toward vulture (vulture flapped & rose). One imm. chased after briefly, both flex-gliding and twisting and, losing 100+ ' altitude. Then the two circled and rose together over Parking Knoll (11:18). 11:20, 2 perched adults as before. 11:25, the 2 min. circled 200+ ' over 1.0. 11:35, a possible condor perched atop Whitesacre Pk. Breeze fair + cool, from E. - most so far today. Claude Lanning - alts-status + alto- cum- ulus. 11:40, 2 perched adults as before. Perhaps these fed late yesterday or early today. About 11:55 the 1 adult disappeared from Flat Co. 12:09 one adult still on Rock Ridge and 1 (?) atop Whitesacre Pk. I left & hiked 2 miles down road to Pete Lagan's. No gates locked or signs up yet. Hiked back to Hopper Band trail and started lawn at 1:30. The road, incidentally, show.
