Gymnogyps californianus February 18, 1948 Hopper Canyon, Ventura Co. up trail toward Hopper Rim. 9:15, I saw one adult perched on branch of dead Lo. near crest of Flat Knapp, an immature in similar spot 200±yds. down slope to N., 4 another adult 100±yds. further down slope. All stood quietly, upper 2 facing E., lower W.. Faint breeze. All 3 on steep slope - perhaps the 2 flying adults perched. Small patches of snow in protected spots on trail. Passed 3/4±miles W. of perched birds. Air calm. 9:30 reached Pole Canyon road. Only the imm. still perched, it appeared. Light SE breeze. 9:45 one visible in Saddle Lo. 10:00, arrived at Pyramid LO; faint SE breeze. Saw 1 perched just W. of Rock Ridge in dead Lo. (immature). 10:15 adult with 2 right secondaries and #4 right primary out soared toward LO from over Parking Knoll; 2 others soaring over South Canyon. Soaring slow and smooth but apparently very so if soarability of air good. Near adult dropped legs briefly as it passed E. of LO (100±over Rim). It joined another over Spring Canyon Mdw. 10:20, an imm. passed 50±' over LO heading N. too. First adult now over Old Cabin where it had risen in company with a circling red-tailed hawk. 10:24, this (?) over, still with hawk, circling at extreme head of Hopper Canyon (white Point area). 10:25, the imm. small low at N. Bt. Still one perched at
