Gymnogyps californianus February 19, 1948 Hopper Ranch, Ventura Co. days about that time. The drought this year was the worst since 1877 (chack year) according to Fellmanites. Percy said his grandfather had 10,000 sheep in S. Ventura Co. in 18-(?), a drought year, and only 300 by the end of the year (much corder food then). Two horses had died on the ranch just before the storm. They were cut open & autopsied & pushed over a bluff about 1 mile E. of the ranehhouse. I examined one carcass - exposed & intact corders - but found no corder sign. Percy had seen corders circling that area one day and believed the birds had found the carcasses. Many ravens had fed at carcasses. Percy had been at this ranch since 1930. I drove to the top of ridge between the routh house & Wazily Canyon, arriving 8:45 a.m. Sky 8/10 cirro- stratus; calm, warm. 9:05, Fair E. breeze; 2 adults over circling & rising just E. slope of South Ridge. One soared up Hopper Canyon, the other worked W. over Flat Hump. Outside edge of tail tilted down & held thus before turn. Inner side primaries sometimes dipped down at start of turn. On one turn, both wings flattened (in dihedral) at start. In general, altitude lost & speed gained in turning. I liked
