Gymnogyps californianus # December 27, 1947 Hopper Ranch, Ventura Co., Calif. Believed there would be many cattle deaths this winter because of food & water shortage. December 28, 1947 Nr. Hopper Mtn, Ventura Co., Calif. Allan Watson & I hunted quail on Hopper Ranch & in Wesly Canyon. At 8:30 a.m., sky cirrus overcast, calm. Same at 10 a.m. when we first reached Wesly Canyon. A road from Percy's goes goes into Wesly Canyon to the site of the old oil well. We saw 3 deers & a golden eagle. At 10:54, saw one adult (?) circling over S. Ridge, 4 at 10:56 another. Both disappeared N. of this ridge. At 1 p.m. we arrived at Pyramid Lookout on foot. A survey revealed 7 condors:- 2 ad. & 2 immature perched in separate dead trees at Near Boost Trees, 2 imm., and 1 adult on Double Pa., 4-2 adults (perhaps 3) circling over Arundel Ridge. All perched ones were gone by 1:35. 1:40 I noticed our stop the nearest conifer at SW of Parking Place - it took off to S., circled & rose over Parking Knoll. 1:45 I saw 5 just above horizon, possibly just entering the Hopper Basin area. 1:55, I sat atop the Lookout - only one perched visible - on next to highest Near Boost Tree. 2:06, 2 adults soared S. about 700' overhead & joined 6 others near head of canyon just SW of Parking Place. All 8 circled about 700' over me, the hissing of their wings being plainly audible (one perched still). Of the 7, 4 ad. 2 imm.
