Gymnogyps californianus June 18 1947 Nr. Cholame Calif. After 2+ minutes, they began to fly, a few at a time, until all but 3 immatures were in air. These 3 clustered about 100 yds. S. of calf & seemed to be feeding at part of it. Dan said he saw 1 of these with a piece of gut. Most that left flapped heavily northward for 1/2+ mile, then landed at var- ious scattered spots in the closely cropped grass. We drove to about 150 yds. W. of carcass. A lone, dark sooty immature (? 2nd year?; good plunge) remained until after we stopped, then flapped away to W. with 28, 11, etc. flops. Feet were seen to be together as this imm. & some pre- vious adults took off. We visited the spot where the 3 immatures were but found only tracks, no meat. The calf carcass we found over half consumed. The upper side was opened from thigh to neck & the upper fore- leg pulled inside-out through the hide. The backbone (= neural spines) and ribs were cleaned of meat; all organs were gone though intestinal contents partially filled the cavity. Tails were intact. There had been some mildly at upper ear & at gums. The carcass had apparently not been moved. Later we saw one coyote — it may have helped clean the carcass. Pelvis were embroden though several were pulled free from sternum. We left them — several cordon scattered in air & several on ground 1/2 mile or more from carcass.
