Gymnogyps californianus June 17, 1947 Mr. Cholame, San Luis Obispo C. The 2 condors over the E. edge of Cholame Flat. One descended and dove at the other - then they separated & descended separately to alight about 1 mile N. of the big corral (about 4 miles N. of Cholame). We drove around to the E. side & to about ½ mile E. of carcass. We saw 1 condor in air, rising, & working away to the west; 4 2 adults at the carcass, with 7± turkey vultures and 3± ravens. The condors stood 6±' from the carcass as vultures fed. Then we drove to within 250 yds. of the carcass. One condor hopped atop the calf, & ruffled down, pulled several times at the side just anterior to leg of calf. The other adult stood quietly, ruffled up. Turkey vultures hopped off of carcass, without protest, as condor mounted it. The condors left the carcass after 3± minutes, took off to N. with 3± hops part 30 flaps before gliding. It landed about 1 mile N. of carcass on slightly higher ground. The turkey vultures again mounted the carcass. The second adult then hopped on the carcass & fed as the first had it in about 3 minutes it too took off with 30 flaps, a glide, then 6, 11, etc. flaps. It landed beside the first adult. We approached the carcass & flushed the turkey vultures. The carcass proved to be a bare yearling calf, lying on its side on open flat ground. It had little adorn apparently had been dead about
