Gymnogyps californianus
June 6, 1946 Nr. Whiteacre Pk, Calif.
flet down, soaring very close to some cliffs, 4 at 10:41
landed on a slightly whitened point of a sandstone cliff
about 3/8 mile N. of and 400' below me. This was
near top of the lowest of the big ledges below the
first W.-running spur S. of Whiteacre Pk. The point
was about 10' from top of the 80'+ ledge, & the ground
below the cliff sloped steeply away for 1/4 mile to
canyon bottom. 2 other points nearby were slightly
whitened also. at 10:58 this bird flopped & jumped up-
ward and broke into a 'V' in the cliff, out of my
sight. Probably that is the nest (#13) but it is not
visible from any cliff in the Whiteacre area - it could
apparently be seen from the Squaw Flat road, however, about
1/2 mile to W. of nest (NE of Sulphur Pk). At 11:09 the
other adult soared past the nest, crop area bulg-
ing greatly. This bird continued 1/2± mile S. of
nest, then Suffy Cheeks took off. They circled together,
feet down, until at bird level above nest. Then
both went into a steep banked dive for 150'+ ft.
as a raven attacked them (a raven nest in a
near cliff there). The raven attacked several more
times, flying after the carders & croaking. Appar-
ently it never actually hit a carder. The raven
flew away when carder headed toward it in
circling, then chased carder as raven was turned.
The raven nest apparently about 200' above &
