July 27, 1946 Bakerfield, Calif.
may also have some condor information. The Indians
around Bakersfield, the Yokutumne, had a condor
dance & song & story, said Lotta. Lotta also said that
at Canfield Ranch between Bakersfield & Maricopa
he saw 3 condors on a carcass in May, & [illegible] others
in air there.
August 22, 1946 N. Castle Mtn, Monterey Co.
Allie Lewis, who lives near Turkey Flat & rides the
hills near there, said he saw 3 condors at a water
trough about 2 months ago - I rather doubt this
as it sounds like a story he told me before. He said
the condors were on trough & he at first thought
they were catching frogs.
Aug. 24, 1946 Castle Mtn, Kings Co.
Spent the 23 & 24th hunting deer in the
Castle Mtn. area including the cliff tops
at head of Arrayo Pinos, & looked down
several times on the coast trees there. The
trees had bare whitewashed branches where
the condors formerly perched, but I saw no
condors during this visit. There were about
150 cattle on the mountain above Dark Hole
spring, many in poor condition.
