Gymnogyps californianus July 26, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. water running well at Coldwater Canyon falls, dry at falls at Oilwell Point. 8:25, breeze faint; I saw one adult soar out of foot of South Canyon & alight atop a stilb about 3/8 mile SE of the lait & possibly in sight of it. 8:27, a second adult perched 100± over lait, rose above the Rim, then soared 200± over me, then about ½ mile SE & back, then ½ mile NNE where it circled 200± above Rim (8:40). 8:41, the perched one was gone, & 2 adults circled 200± over head of Big Mdw. There 2 circled & rose above Parking Knoll, & 1 passed N. 200± over me at 8:45, then headed E; second headed SE about 1 mile, then N, then back to W. in South Canyon as if descending. Breeze faint to light from SE, sky 1/10 serena. 8:55, I saw 1 atop high foot dead tree atop Rock Ridge. 9:05, I saw 2 perched in shade about 8' S. of the middle pool at Carder Falls - saw none there yesterday, but cool so maybe not thirsty. 9:10, one was about 1 ft. from pool edge. Second walked to pool edge at 9:20. Both possibly drank and/or bathed - in shadow of rocks. 9:20, we walked into sunshine at N. side of pool. The other emerged from pool flapping, as if having bathed, then walked into sunshine beside other & shake up its feathers. 9:26, one apparently in pool, flapping; it emerged & flapped wings 7 times as if to dry them, then walked & hopped up rocks to a point about 15' S. & 8' above pool (in shade).
