Gymnogyps californianus
June 6, 1946 Nr. Whiteacre Pt., Calif.
Lock, 4 slowly drawn forward - tail as swiveling to left in too, slowly - then folded wing but remained bent forward for 1 minute. Upper had a white feather showing stop wing near right elbow; lower was apparent by "Puffy cheeks". Both preened in the sunshine. Sky clear, visibility good (best for several days), air calm - occasional faint breeze. This roost tree is about 120 yds. down the 30±% N. slope. There are many green & 2 dead trees higher on the ridge. The ridge faces Deer Mdw. (on S. side of next ridge to N.) where I have seen many deer, 4 one bin this year). At 8:55 lower adult cocked its wings as if to take off, then folded them, then cached them again & took off. It circled & figure- eighed around the perch tree without flapping until about 20' above it, then gave a wing dip, put feet down & after a few more times swooped to a landing about 10' from and 2±' below the other the flyer was definitely "Puffy Cheeks". Air still calm - perhaps this bird found soaring too arduous so landed. I suppose the birds are somewhat disturbed by my presence. 9:06, the same adult again off (lost it) while other was turned around, now facing NE, ruff down, crop opterium barely showing. 9:15, a steady cool S.W. breeze commenced, about 8 m.p.h. I saw much as there may be a nest here, & I saw counting here, it may be that counting occurs only close to the area
