Gymnogyps californianus July 23, 1946 Nr. Squaw Flat, Ventura Co. stretching leg simultaneously. Preened between wing feathers from front + outside, bill probing + nibbling between feathers. 3:37, chick stood at very brink of cave, facing in; a few silby filaments on pygostyle waved in the breeze. 3:40, again stretched right wing to floor + refolded it. 3:43, stretched left (or both) wings high - touching the ceiling. 3:45, faced out of hole again. Stretched wings up, wrists apparently touching ceiling. Retired nearly out of sight, then out to edge again at 3:46½, then back in shade about 4' from entrance (3:47). The chick is quite active at this time, apparently. No crop bulge noted. 3:53, front 1/3 out back in sunshine, 4 chicks preening vigorously. About 3 1/4 mile away, 4 easily visible, a duck hawk was att- acking an eagle, but the chick paid no apparent att- ention. 4 p.m., chick 1/4 in sunshine, standing, head moving about occasionally. Light W. breeze still. Chick preened for several minutes, + poked about the rock at S. side of cave with bill. By 4:30, chick was at same spot & had shown little more action. Stay 9/10 alto - stertus again. 4:32, chick out of sight in cave. Perhaps the adults do not roost close to nest at this stage as there has been no sign of them. Saw no more of chick either by 5 p.m., so left. Anita Peyton accompanied Vorhies of Univ. of Arizona up to Napper Rim recently. They stayed around
