Gymnogyps californianus July 23,1946 Nr. Squan Flat,Ventura C. cast toward #13 nest. By 10:40 I could see the nest cave. At 11:20 I was on the slope about 200' below and 300 yds. E. of the nest cave. I saw the chick standing about 2' back from entrance, quietly. It was dark gray & down covered, with a fringe of 3+ feathers on wing. It stood sideways to entrance for about 15 minutes before changing position. Neck appeared dark in color, I saw no corders at the root wig trees near nest. Day warm & muggy- overcast with alto stratus, 9/10, but quite bright, & little breeze. There was considerable whitework at cave entrance, running down the rock for about 3'. Chick -> [illegible] whitewash About 11:50 the chick went back out of right - perhaps it was just out to watch me. At about 12:30 I moved to foot of Deer Meadow, about 150' below & 400 yds. W. of nest. I saw chick standing about 4' from entrance at 12:30, & quietest - gone from sight a few minutes later. 2 p.m.; sky 7/10 alto stratus & alto cum- ulus; fair W. breeze. At 2:05 one adult circled over the ruin above #13 nest, then over #13 nest roast trees, then continued on to S. - feet were never down
