Gymnogyps californianus July 13, 1996 Mr. Fountain Springs, Calif. mother & who had just completed his first year at "J.C." He said he had heard about condors on Founder's Day at J.C. - that he knew one was killed near here last year & that they were almost extinct. He had been about 10 years in the Whit River - Fountain Springs area but had not seen a condor to know it. I pointed out one to three of them to him several times, but he showed no enthusiasm. He said they had just finished poisoning for squirrels here yesterday, & that he believed the poisoners were working on N. side of Calif. Hot Springs road & E. side of Whit River road. Glen Olen of Fountain Springs was locally in charge. County furnishes the poison but not the labor. I obtained permission to walk & drive about the ranch & drove to a hill about 1/2 mile E. of the ranch house (12:35). Breeze fair from N.W. I saw one dead swollen cottontail rabbit, as yet untouched. The vultures & condors seemed to be spread to SE about 1 mile or so, & over to Calif. Hot Springs road area. At 1:30 I saw 3 circling & rising fast about 2 miles east & 2 miles N. of Fountain Springs. I went then to a point about 1 mile further S. but saw only turkey vultures from there by 2:20. Then returned to first spot but saw none by 2:55 - 4 very few turkey vultures. I found 3 dead squirrels by some rocks;
