yds. from me at 100± ft. altitude and landed
about 3/8 mile E. of the road on an oat-covered 26° slope. A golden eagle stood 30±' from this adult &
apparently pecked near a squirrel hole (11:25). About
11:30 the eagle walked slowly up to the carder, raised
its wings, & pecked out at the carder - the latter
retreated about 6'; then all calm again. Earlier I
saw that carder's neck & cheeks were puffed up,
& that bill was open, as if hot. Day hot (95°),
& breeze light, with clear sky. The hills here are
rolling with occasional ashes & small granite out-
croppings. The eagle left about 11:34; the adult about
11:35. It flopped-circled, then circled, wandered about
1/2 mile S W, then descended as if to alight. I drove
1/2 mile further down the road to house of C.C. Farm-
worth, a cattle rancher. The carder was apparently
on the slopes about 3/8 mile W. of this house. At 11:54
an immature (4± yr. old) flew off from that spot, &
an adult about 11:57. Later I saw turkey vultures
feeding there. The adult flew about 1/2 mile N., then
spiraled to ground again. About 12:08 I saw 2
carders flap from that area, & 3 total in air. At
about 12:15 I saw 2 about 1/2 mile SE of the
house. At 12:35 I saw 1 about 2 miles E. of Fountain
Springs with a group of 15± turkey vultures. I
talked with C.C. Farmworth who lived there with his
