Gymnogyps californianus
June 3, 1946
Whiteacre Pk, Calif.
Anus hole was about 2x3". Abdomen opening extended between forelegs & possibly had been cut open. Osseous was fairly well cleaned of flesh but attached to hide still. Neck was inside out & skull shrunken except for rostrum from nose to eyes. No internal organs or smell was evident. Several rocks nearby showed possible - soda whitewash. Ribs of 3 remaining feet were intact. Condors probably contributed to cleaning of this carcass. I ascended Whiteacre Pk. At 1:25 when 50±' from top, I saw an adult 300±' overhead. It was the puffy cheeked one with primary out of each wing while I saw this morning. I was on top (5100 ft.) at 1:30. The adult soared back & forth over me 2-3 times, feet down, then headed S., feet up, in a long glide. At 1:42 I lost track of this bird apparently over the E. slope of Nopper Mtn. Fair W. breeze atop the jet peak; sky 3/10 cover. 2:00, I saw an adult soaring near where I first saw the carcass this morning. It skirted the cliffs & nosed siding, then headed 200±' over me. It was "Puffy Cheeks" again. It tacked slowly back & forth at about 6000' level until about 1 mile toward Sulphur Pk., then fell off to left to above Rim, then soared over me again at about 5400' level (2:23), then soared 1/2± mile S. & back, then to W. at 6000±'
