Gymnogyps californianus July 9, 1946 Temblor Ranch, Calif. Antelope Valley one. On the "home" ranch (Betterwater area), strychnine thallium, & other squirrel poisons have been used for years without apparently affecting turkey vultures, Carl said. Carl doesn't believe coyotes or condors will eat an anthrax-killed animal. He put anthrax-killed cows out for coyote bait on several occasions but no birds or sept wolves fed on them (& no coyotes). In 1942 about 70 cattle died from anthrax in the Betterwater area in July & August, & many buzzards & condors were seen in the area then. Anthrax carcasses are burned to ashes as soon as found. Carl said he used to raise sheep & that there were about 7000 in this area (Temblor Range), & he believes condors were more common when sheep were here (had sheep 10-12 years after got ranch 5 years ago). Carl had a very low opinion of "spotters". They shoot his cattle & shoot hawks in his water tanks & enter his property in spite of posting. He believes the men around the oil fields are some of the worst offenders. He promised to record info for any further instances of condors in this locality. He is very interested in wildlife, especially quail. July 12, 1946 Springville, Calif. Talked with district ranger Struble of the U.S.F.S. He had taken over here June 1 & was different from most
