July 8, 1946 Nr. Cholame, C.I.T.
11:20 I saw one about 3 miles S. of me, circling &
Drifting E., at 11:30 lost it about over, Palomino
Pass. Fair 5W wind continued. I revisited the raft carcass.
Both ears were still present. Meat from distal 1/3 of mandible
was eaten away. Neck hollow. There was a 4½" hole in
belly & 3½" hole at anus, few flies, little smell - this
calf might furnish a meal for 1 or 2 cattara in a pinch.
Total remains weighed 25 lbs. I drove over Palomino Pass,
South Antelope Valley, then S. below foothills to Corners
Canyon - saw no cattara, only stock & few cattle bei-
low Corners.
July 9, 1946 Temblor Ranch, C.I.T.
Drove from Corners Canyon to Temblor Ranch which is
owned by Carl Twisselman, brother-in-law of Dan
McMillen. Carl was not home, but talked with his wife
& son (14½) Kenneth. They had some photos which show-
ed cattara about 1 mile from the house on their road -
there were 14 at that time they said; the photos show-
ed about 7. One was photo was close enough for a
positive identification of an adult. There 14 were -
one was here about 3 months ago feeding on a calf
which they had dragged out in the field from the
dam (did previously). They had been here 5 years
& had seen cattara every year, they said. Now
they had only cattle but before they had the ranch
there were sheep here. Mrs. T. said that many of
