Gymnogyps californianus
July 6, 1946 Beartrap Canyon, G.L.T., light
it came from. Day clear & warm, breeze from E.
about 9 a.m. Claude Braun & "Kelly" Trumbdale used to
watch with a large telescope (40+ power, said Fred T., +
tripod) from this area for days, one going out & getting
grub while other watched. Wind light to fair from W.
Later, & I continued watching & took some photos
of the Dawson nest locale. At 4:11 p.m., fair W. wind
still, two adults appeared over Beartrap Can-
you as if coming from E. Each flapped a few times,
& one chased the other for one turn. They separated &
wandered about, passing 600' above me at 4:25. Saw
8 buzzards about this time - most small all day. At
4:37 the two circled with last below 8 buzzards
over the bluffy - knoll about 1 mile E. of the Dawson
nest site. They headed W. about 1/2 mile apart, the
buzzards more a less following, & at 4:38 one
landed atop a stubby sky line about 1/2 mile SE
of the "jiff" & the other passed 1/4+ mile SE of this one
as if headed into Hay Canyon. 4:42, the first shifted
about 100' type. NW to a green pine (yellow?). These
birds seem, then, to be only roosting in this area
& not nesting. 4:47, an adult from ? circled
1000' above me, then E. & S. over the bluffy - knoll.
4:57, this bird joined 2 other adults (3 total)
4:13+ buzzards 800' above me, & they milled
together, the carbon lowest in the group. They
