Gymnogyps californianus June 30, 1946 Nr. Castle Mtn., Calif. ward, skirting the slope, out of my sight in next ravine. I then saw another perched, across the canyon about 300 yds. from main roost tree, in a green diggin pine - so 4 left departed + 3 perched = 7 accounted for. But 2 where lost perched as described. By 7:45, 2 more gone, early-left perched. Fair wind continued from NE. 7:50, I saw 8 about 1 mile to E. of me, circling & rising, extended up to 1000±' in a loose group. They headed, struggling, to SE, 4 were seen below horizon at SE end of Table Mts. about 7:58. Then two perched in same tree as before, & an adult joined them from a nearby tree - so 8 in air, 3 perched, at 8 a.m. (11 total!). There are 300± oil derivatives near a small town about 15 miles N. of this spot, & Kettman Wells seems an easy loop to lost. At least 2 of the 3 perched were adults. Two were off, singly, by 8:04, leaving 1 adult. The second to leave glided about 1 mile N., circled now 500±', then glided fast about 2 miles to E. where it joined an other, & both commenced circling as if to rise above the bluffs near them (8:09). The last perched adult shifted to another tree 100± yds. towards the bluffs, & then another 100± yds. further on. In this tree was a possible ander, previously diagnosed as a piece of wood (a 1945 mm.?). The adult held wings half spread, facing sun, for 15 minute. 8:17, I saw one circling at SE end of Table Mts. - the route
