Gymnogyps californianus June 29, 1946 Nr. Cholame, Calif. this caw. I drove to a ridge about 1/4 mile W. of Carrs at 4:00 from there saw 10 milling in a close bunch about 1000' over Cholame Flat, + [illegible] N. about 1000' over Carrs. About 11 a.m. I saw at least 7 of these leading S., in a struggling bunch. I drove to near Cholame Rocks to watch the general area. Breeze was fair from the E. Apparently today was first that condors had fed on this carcass. The bunch, being disturbed early in the day, apparently headed for the Shale Wells area. At least 11 (counted several times), + the 2 seen at 9:50 probably not with them. This carcass was about 1/2 mile E. of Hancock Ranch road. I saw no more sign of condors - or buzzards or ravens - near the (around 2 p.m.) crow by 11:45 so drove to Table Mtn. tops via Cholame Ranch. From this mountain, we can look directly down on Cholame Ranch & the flats, + one congruence Shale Wells in a direct line - to go there from here, it would be shortest for condors to pose NE of Orchard Rk. There was a fair E. wind, visibility fair. I stationed myself at head of Animal Canyon where I could see Castle Mtn., Animal Canyon, + Table Mtns., + look toward Cholame + Orchard Rks. areas. I saw no condors until 4:45, then saw 2 approaching from S.W. below my level. They flew glided to N. along the foothills NE of Turkey
