Gymnogypes californianus June 28 1946 Shale Hills, Calif. toward the Annette Lookout, 43 Strung in a vertical column for 1000', about 2 miles S. of the Pass. I drove on about a mile, then at 1:43 saw 7 leave the ground, 1 at a time, from a small draw in 10% SE slope about 2 miles S.+½ mile E. of the Pass. I was at a farmhouse about 1 mile from the canons then, 4 there were 6+ vultures circling the canyon area. These birds rose quickly in a scattered group, then headed N. One descended low in a fast glide into an E. canyon, about 1 mile S. of the Pass, then some began to fly out of that canyon, 1 at a time, 4 land on a broken ridge near canyon mouth, until 5 were on the ground then within a 30' circle. After 3+ minutes these took off, circled, 4 rose, 4 I counted 10 in air with 2 or 3 vultures. These crossed over the 174 ft. knoll there, then circled & rose again, 4 I saw 8 there about 2 p.m. at 2:05 all visible had headed NW, some 1000' or more above the knoll. This is rolling closely-cropped-grass country, very dry. Breeze fair from tt. E. Met a sheep- herder who camps about ½ mile W. of where I saw 10 condors at a sheep carcass. He said he knew condors & sometimes saw them, but had seen none this year. He had heard of some feeding on a dog a few weeks ago. Met the rancher who
