Gymnogyps californianus
June 28, 1946 Nr. Cholame, Calif.
and roosting on Garcia Rocks (local name). There were some pictures taken of these birds, he believed,
by people at Twisselman Ranch. On Cholame Flat I found the 7 rabbits I had laid out on June 26 consumed,
& turkey vulture feathers on the ground near them (no corder sign). At 9:31 I saw the first corder - adult
with gap in outer secondaries of both sides - coming
from direction of the SE end of Table Mtn.; it circled
over me, then headed toward the cattle wallow. At 9:37
I saw a second heading my way from direction of
Castle Mtn. (about 2 miles distant). 9:45, one adult
was circling 300t' over the cattle wallow. Calm & warm. At 9:59 I saw one apparently over
the usual hill at SE side of Cholame Flat or
if taking the route to Sholo Hills area. Saw no more
by 11:15, so descended to Cholame Flat & inspected
the old calf carcass. It was dry hides & bare
bones now, many bones being scattered as if
by coyotes, & I found no corder sign. Also,
at this carcass was exceedingly rough - saw-tacked
adobe dried hard. The corder mostly being
around on the windward side of this carcass. I
looked at 3 old carcasses but saw no corder sign.
Then drove via Polonia Pass to Antelope Valley
& Raven Pass. Saw no corders until 1:35 when at
Raven Pass, then saw one circling about 2 miles
