Gymnogyps californianus June 25, 1946 was good from the lookout. We descended to near Keke's Corner & lunching. At 12:15 saw 2 over Shale Hills about 3 miles SW of Keke's Corner - saw 4 there at 12:30. A man named Carl said that recently the county had poisoned squirrels in that area, & that Ad Grant's sheep (1000 head) were also in that area. He said the first condors he saw here were about a week ago & that he saw them every summer since he had been here (7 or 8 years). One was supposed to have been found drowned in (Crest still) a water tank here about 8 years ago - a man was going to have it mounted & the bird was taken from him by the game warden. McMillan knew this story but wasn't sure about its veracity. About 12:35, we saw 8 over some area. Then we drove southward toward the birds & at 12:50 came upon 4 or 5 circling & rising about 1/2 mile ahead of us from canyon bottom in Shale Hills. There hills are treeless & rounded, covered with sparse short grass. We counted up to 9 condors (1 min.), circling & rising, the highest to 1000 ±'. Some descended again & we saw 6 at 1:07. One at a time & landed on a hill side by 1:09. A turkey vulture left as first landed beside it. 1:10, 5 on ground & 3 in air up to 400' over them, the 3 in a tight bunch. We drove toward the birds - they began fleeing when we were about
