Gymnogyps californianus
June 29, 1946 Nr. Cholame, Calif.
(Norfords) were poor & many sick from the recent
branding & cutting. Dan believes that clean farming
would cut down the carcasses available to condors.
Cholame Ranch runs on a large area basis & employs largely Mexican nationals. Dan believes there
may be some condors roosting on Castle Mtn. It is 33
miles air line from where we saw condors today to
Beartrap Canyon - the nearly down-wind. Jan says
that sheep are brought in to this area later in the year
to feed on the grain stubble.
June 25, 1946 Nr. Cholame, Calif.
with Dan & Donald McMillan drove to E. side of
Cholame Flat to watch for condors, arriving 8:15
a.m. We expected them to come from the S.W. At 8:45
I saw 2 about 300' over the calf carcass of yesterday,
then others over Cholame Wells, 2 over the
hills to N. of us, appear another in direction of
Castle Mtn. heading W., & another circling about
3 miles toward Castle Mtn.! At least 10 seen
by 9:03. Day clear & warm, breeze faint
or absent. This early appearance plus
coming from Castle Mtn. direction indicates
roosting at Castle Mtn.! 9:15, 4 condors, 4+ juveniles,
41 Turkey vulture circling 200±' over calf
200-500'
nearby. 9:20, 8 condors scattered about 2-500'
over calf, 2 adults, 3 juveniles & 6 adults. 9:30,
