Gymnogyps californianus
June 24, 1996
Nr. Cholame, Calif
12:43 - only 1 where the 3, 2 at carcass, 4 2 on ground
100± yds. E. of carcass. 12:50, at least 4 at carcass - I
could see no others on ground; 4 no juveniles or multitudes at
carcasses. At least 2 of 4 were adults / atop carcass.
12:55, one landed 200± yds. E. of carcass at the "water"
(edge of green grass). 1 p.m., one by carcass flopped-glid
to the water & landed 6±' from cobra perched there, the perched
one throwing up wings & diving away. 1:03, 3 at water &
3 at carcass. 1:05, one flew from carcass to water
& landed with the 3 there; 1:06, one left water & landed
100±' S of carcass (where 2 still), then 2 carcasses
about 1:07. 1:12, an adult flew from water to
carcass - 4 at carcass, 1 visible at water. Feeding
seldom or nil. 1:17, both at water off - at least one
landed 50±' from carcass. Cow walked up & sniffed calf
& the condors fled, flopping, & stood about 15' to 50'
from cow. As cow retreated, one followed & re-
turned to carcass. 1:30, 4 condors plainly visible close
to carcass (5 believed there), but only 1 or 2 feeding it
appeared. 1:40 - 5 visible & 2 buzzards nearby, at car-
cass. Fair N.E. breeze continued. All takeoffs here
despite wind. 1:45, one condor was 100± yds. E.
of calf on ground, 4 we left carcass, circled, &
slit about 200 yds. W. of calf. The E. we walked
Toward calf & followed it (so 4 at carcass at 1:50).
3 multitudes also near calf, but all birds there quiet,
