Gymnogyps californianus June 24, 1996 Nr. Cholame, Calif 12:43 - only 1 where the 3, 2 at carcass, 4 2 on ground 100± yds. E. of carcass. 12:50, at least 4 at carcass - I could see no others on ground; 4 no juveniles or multitudes at carcasses. At least 2 of 4 were adults / atop carcass. 12:55, one landed 200± yds. E. of carcass at the "water" (edge of green grass). 1 p.m., one by carcass flopped-glid to the water & landed 6±' from cobra perched there, the perched one throwing up wings & diving away. 1:03, 3 at water & 3 at carcass. 1:05, one flew from carcass to water & landed with the 3 there; 1:06, one left water & landed 100±' S of carcass (where 2 still), then 2 carcasses about 1:07. 1:12, an adult flew from water to carcass - 4 at carcass, 1 visible at water. Feeding seldom or nil. 1:17, both at water off - at least one landed 50±' from carcass. Cow walked up & sniffed calf & the condors fled, flopping, & stood about 15' to 50' from cow. As cow retreated, one followed & re- turned to carcass. 1:30, 4 condors plainly visible close to carcass (5 believed there), but only 1 or 2 feeding it appeared. 1:40 - 5 visible & 2 buzzards nearby, at car- cass. Fair N.E. breeze continued. All takeoffs here despite wind. 1:45, one condor was 100± yds. E. of calf on ground, 4 we left carcass, circled, & slit about 200 yds. W. of calf. The E. we walked Toward calf & followed it (so 4 at carcass at 1:50). 3 multitudes also near calf, but all birds there quiet,
