Gymnogyps californianus June 10, 1946 Santa Barbara, Calif. into the Aquaw Flats area. This was late in May, 1943. One calf Storer's blind was of green brush, made to look like a brush, & lined with dark cloth - even the lens was covered. This was in the big meadow just W. of Whitacre Pl. They camped at Aquaw Flat & hiked up to blind daily. One calf was put out & watched, but flies & coyotes got it in time. A second was put out about June 5. Storer had been in the blind several hours & had seen no carders; he saw a rattlesnake in the blind & shot it, then as he tossed the body out he noted that a carder was soaring about 1/2 mile away. Next day one carder came to the carcass. The third day, none. The third calf, about a 90 pounder, was put out about June 10. Up to 7 carders were seen in air at once, & at about 10:30 they descended, up to 7 at a time lying on the ground. Storer shot his pictures. Then he climbed out of the blind & continued to shoot - as long as he sat still, the carders seemed unalamed by his presence "40 or 50 paces" away. Storer believes that once the blinds are down they pay little attention to the blind, but before this they were "very shy." This last 90 calf was killed the morning the carders fed on it. They pecked
