Gymnogyps californianus
June 17, 1946 Nr. Squaw Flat, Calif.
3:04 landed in a green Pseudotetragna - apparently
the usual one. The other adult landed on the
perch 5 ft. of nest hole about 3:05. At 3:07 it
clambered, wings flopping, to the higher point. Then,
hardly hesitating, walked down the boulder. It
paused as if having difficulty with footing before
going down this rock; held wings up as it walked
the 4+ steps down & hopped to nest floor. The
bird stood, facing in case, & walked slowly in going
out of sight at 3:08. At 4:10 I could see the bird
of the one in tree - almost entirely in shade, apparently, & I
had seen no activity at nest so supposed the "B" bird
still in. At 4:20 I started downhill toward road. At
4:28 the "A" adult was atop the boulder which
formed S. side of cave entrance - it was still there
at 4:50 p.m. I returned to Fillmore.
June 18, 1946 Santa Barbara, Calif.
Drove from Fillmore via Ojai to Santa Barbara. Left
some condor pics & info at Ojai Burger Station for the
lookouts of that district. At Santa Barbara visited
Cz Rett & Waldo Aldott at the museum. Rett said
that he had heard from Elr McMillan that he &
Irving (? - a sailor painter from Berkeley) had visited
the "fift" but had seen no condors there.
Elr also told Rett that he had heard a sheepman
say he shot one the other day (in April), & had
