Gymnogyps californicus June 3/1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. True an adult sunned its backs - instead of spreading wings parallel to branch, the bird turned so that wings were perpendicular to sun rays although this required a clumsy footing, the perch branch passing through the soil (branch pointed nearly at sun). 4:55, 4 sunning blacks at Cedar Falls area; 1 at "Log Pool" (gone 4:57). 5 p.m., 3 about 60' S. of the center or "Log Pool"; 2 (coset+summ.) with wings spread, backs to sun. On SE side of lowest pool there were 3, one on the sandstone slope, 1 with wings spread facing the sun (all immatures). 5:03, two more sunning blacks came into view near lowest pool. An adult, wings spread, walked up to where an inim. sunned at the inim. Roused & toward pool. All of the center ("Log") pool now in shadow. 5:08, at one point, about 200' S. of "Log Pool" on a rounded sandstone edge, 3 immatures sunned backs, wings outspread, within, about 5' of one another. These birds were only 6 to 10' from the brush line. All 3 half folded wings at 5:11, 5:13, the sunset line was about to cross these 3 and 5 other condors, 100' N. of them. Two of these climbed to very edge of brush, shaking it in fact, + spread wings, as if trying to get out of shadow. One took off + other folded wings when shadow overtook him.
