Gymnogyps californianus June 13, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. Roost Trees near foot of Big Meadow (no others in that tree groups). About 2:45 I saw 5 circling over Water Tank Canyon below Big Meadow. Then I saw an adult flap horizontally to a landing in foot of Big Meadow. Then saw at least 2 leave that area. About 2:48 saw another adult fly, flapping, through the oaks to land in that vicinity again. 2:50, I saw 3 circling low over canyon below Big Meadow again. Then saw 3 near or under an oak, in shade, near foot of Big Meadow. About 5 cattle were approaching them; they the cattle stopped 100 yds. away, one condor flopped, 4 cattle turned & walked uphill (coincidence?). 3 p.m., I saw 2 perched in lower Near Roost Trees, 1 in tree to 5. of foot of Big Meadow, 4 or under a near an oak in foot of Big Mdw., 44 ft. in air. One adult took off flapping thru the trees from foot of Big Meadow at 3:09. An min. Landed there about 3:05. A group of 7 Nez Perce seemed to stand & look at the birds from 100 yds. away. 3:07, two adults were perched in Near Roost Tree. 3:10, two adults over Water Tank Canyon - one glided toward the other head on; the second avoided being hit only by flitting wings & giving a quick banks to one side, then the other.
