Jarvis Island. Arrived Aug 7. Island very dry. Vegetation sparse and low. Old lagoon dry with salax covering it. Cool waters surrounding island 78°F. 20 miles away 87°F. Large concentrations of feeding birds, popyies and turtle. Green seaweed covered reef. Banding easy. RTTB meeting all over, even in open ground, all stages of maling. pop 4000
Sooty Tern - 2 colonies. one about 500 000 birds the second about 10 000. Mostly large chick only about 15 apps being incubated. All nesting in tall grass, 'in high chicks seem to need grass for protection from heat. Banded 50 000 birds.
Greyback Tern - small colony in lagoon 25prs.
Fairy Tern - 2prs. not meeting. B.P. Feathered.
B.G. Booby - 4375 birds nesting in lagoon at night.
L. Frigate - 7000 birds 2500 nest on N. 1000 S
G. Frigate - 1000 birds 250 nests
B.F. Booby - Large pop. 8000 spaced all over Ts.
R.F.Booby - Med. pop. 2500 nesting in sand bushes 1/2 from ground and onground.
Intermediate phase. L. Huber found bird with dull red feet and all brown tail on eggs
B. Booby - 400 birds - 19 nest R. Clapp
Wedge tail - 1 dark phase flying in sooty colony at 1600. several seen offshore. probably small nutty colony.
Naso Frigate - 1 Taken aboard ship at night. 2 seen after leaving island. probably small nesting colony.
Cats - pop. 20
Mice - pop. Very high
Geckos - common
Skinks - not observed
