Sand Island, Johnston Atoll
(Notes)
Bratley, D.A.
1965
Feb. 22 (cont.)
This time also included getting all the
p2 equipped up to the original portion from
the pump-house + unpacking the gear.
Much of the trouble was untangling
the net as it cated in Tribulus. Once
it was dark the canons themselves were
put in place + all charges hooked up
to the detonator. This took another
hour as the ground was soft as it this
gave us trouble positioning, the canons
not properly. The bared ends of the wire
connections also had to be covered with
plastic bags to keep everything dry
during the light intermittent rains. We
then waited 2 hours for sooties to
settle into the plotted area, but very
few of them ever did. I believe this
may have been due to the very high
winds we were experiencing. With the
charges set we had to fire the canons
anyway, so at 10:30 PM the canons
were detonated. One end of the net caught
the sharp spliced ends of a ground wire
running from the Sonar antenna, making a
2 foot rip in the net + the net failed to
twist more than ten feet at this point.
The other two canons took the net its
full 30 ft length + 21 sooties were
captured. Not many for the effort
involved. 15 of the birds were landed +
