Bratley, D.A. 1965 Sand Island, Johnston Atoll (Note) Feb. 21 (cont) and is placed to catch the direct force of the wind. All openings except the back side + an opening for breeding activity behavior in front will be covered by funny socks so that air may pass through freely. Today after supper Norman Skryfard + I stated all the brown booby + red- footed booby nests, giving each nest a number. The eggs are being marked as to the laying date to determine incubation time + later fledging time. Seven brown booby + 3 red-footed booby nests were noted on the east slopes of the island. The incubating birds were almost impossible to catch to check for band numbers as the winds this past week has been blowing with a strong force. As it was only 2 red-foots were captured. East Island was visited today by Norman + I as well as a number of other Coast Guard fellows looking for shells. This was the first time for both Norman + I to set foot on this newly built island in the atoll. It was square, somewhat larger than the original portion of Sand Island, strictly of white coral rock, with one shiny metal building + four antennas. It had one large + one small dock. The life on the island were the shorebirds found along the
