Bratley, D.A. 1964 Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll (Notes) Wed. July 23 Sand Is. — Skins — collected one adult red-tailed tropicbird today which was struck + killed by baseball accidentally. Also collected were 14 heads of Dooty Terns (9 imm.+5 adults). A series of 25-50 heads will be collected for a future project of Bimin Amerson. All heads were taken from birds with broken wings + all were frozen. Thurs. July 23 Sand Is. — Blood Samples — Were requested to get 200 Dooty Tern blood samples today. Tonight 125 were taken + in the process 69 birds were killed, 39 of those being taken as specimens. All samples will be centrifuged to get the sera + the sera of these 200 samples will accompany Dick Merrill when he leaves for Honolulu July 28. 1500 birds were requested also. Fri. July 24 Sand Is. — Blood Samples — 84 samples taken tonight + not more than 8 birds killed. The reason for the much lower mortality was due to drawing only 5cc of blood rather than the 10cc which was drawn last night per bird. Samples of two birds were pooled into one centrifuge tube. This method proved to be much faster also, as the 84 samples took us only 3½ hours to draw in comparison to
