Bratley, D.A 1964 Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll (Notes) Tue. July 14 (ord) found to have the adults with the chicks today. Fri. July 17 Sand Is. — Wedge-tailed Shearwater — a plastic tube was pushed down into the stomach of 4 birds in an attempt to make them regurgitate. The method was unsuccessful. Sooty Tern — A known age immature (red color band # 180) was collected as a specimen tonight. Also 2 adults were taken as specimens (all killed by the dog doe). Common Noddy Tern — one adult collected as specimen. Mon July 20 Sand Is. — Common Noddy Tern — collected 3 adults for study skins tonight. All were tagged + frozen. Tues July 21 Sand Is. — Soil Samples — The beach soil samples are being prepared for shipment today. All area within these dimensions, 6 inches x 12 inches x 1 inch in depth, was taken for each sample. For date + location of sample, see below. Samples 1-6 taken on original portion of island.
