I have not seen them in the Carmel country except at the summit of the Laureles grade. I think I have seen four hundred in a single band. Goldfinches are not seen in such large bands but they seem to be found in hill and level land alike in companies of from two or three to a dozen or more. I have noticed before how plentiful these birds are at this season of the year. August-7. Saratoga, Santa Clara Juncos (probably Thurber's) are quite common and very tame, coming about the camp as if no one were around. One came and alighted on the side of my bunk, not two feet from my head.
