Spatula clypeata.
November 21, 1909.
The drake Shoveller shows no change;
still retains old wing quills.
December 26, 1909.
The drake Shoveller moulted his wing
quills some time ago. His head is beginning
to show some dusky spots particularly
near the base of the bill. The bill is
horn color instead of black as when in
high feather. Some white feathers are
beginning to appear on one shoulder.
January 11, 1910.
The blackish spots at the base of the bill
of the drake Shoveller are becoming more
pronounced, and this morning I noted a
blackish spot about the size of a dime
on the side of the neck.
January 29, 1911.
The one remaining female Shoveller "Zelda" has been in
fresh plumage for some time.
