cormorants flying northwest fairly high above the water.
Just off the mole a flock of about 200 cormorants,
flying very close to the water, passed in front of
the steamer. They were strung out in two single
files which converged at the head.
February 17, 1911.
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
Clear; cold, but not frosty.
There were a few ducks along the seawall and
mole, and one Odenia deglandi was recognized. On
the sand exposed by the low tide at the head of the
mole, there were a number gulls, all of those close
to the track were Larus californicus, chiefly adults,
some 20 were seen. Near the west end of the
mole saw half a dozen ducks flying northwest.
On the bay a number of Larus glaucescens,
immature, followed us about across, not as
many as usual. The bright sunlight on
the water prevents me from watching the birds
well. Two warships now in the harbor
usually have a cloud of gulls about them.
March 12, 1911.
Saw a Stilbia mexicana in an oak tree on
Central Avenue. Flew on rather close approach.
March 13, 1911.
Two Pipilo maculatus in shrubbery yard
next door.
