Mareca americana.
January 13, 1909.
To-day I received a female of this species. The
extent of the white on the top of the head was small.
March 18, 1909.
Some time ago I put this bird to death,
owing to its being blind in one eye and
lame.
February 16, 1911.
Two were received to-day, one a female or
young male in fresh plumage, the other a
very worn bird in faded-out plumage, probably
a female. Both tame, evidently having been
in captivity for a considerable time.
March 12, 1911.
Got a pair from State Game Farm. The drake,
who has a broken toe, is moulting from a plumage
like the female's to the full male plumage. New
feathers are appearing in the breast and back, and
the white wing patches also distinguish him from
the others.
