December 4, 1909.
Yesterday afternoon when crossing the bay, there
were a large number of gulls following the steamer
to Oakland Pier. Many passed within two feet of
where I was sitting on the upper deck. There were
Larus glaniceus in all plumages, an occasional
Larus argentatus, and several Larus californicus.
Along the shore I have noted numerous flocks
of ducks. Have also seen a good many flying.
This morning I saw a flock of about a
hundred cormorants (probably Phalacrocorax auritus)
passing over the foot of Briggs Avenue and
heading down towards the waters of San Leandro
Bay.
December 7, 1909.
This morning I rode on the forward deck of the
ferry steamer. I saw about the usual gulls, a
number of flocks of ducks, and when near
San Francisco nine or ten loons flying
north.
December 26, 1909.
This morning I rowed from the foot of Briggs Avenue
out along the Bay Farm Island shore until about
opposite Park Avenue, Alameda. Birds were not abundant,
although a good many were seen.
Loons. Several. Very wild.
Gulls. Several flocks and single birds flying to windward-
northeast. One or two flocks
[illegible] were [illegible] gulls, apparently Larus
philadelphia. Larus glaniceus was recognized.
