Shew west of Goat Island this morning I saw five scoters flying south. August 31, 1909. San Leandro Bay and sloughs and south shore Bay Farm Island, Alameda Co., Cal. Tulls. Two or three large gulls, Arenaria interpres. One in San Leandro Bay, three or four on south side of island. Eguatarola helvetica. A few. One fine black- bellied individual. Argidælus semifalmatus. Three or four. The quick jerky fashion in which they feed is very noticeable, The bird coming back to its original standing position after each peck with its beak, and pausing a moment before making the next peck.
