August 10, 1909.
San Leandro Bay, sloughs connecting with it, and the south
shore of Bay Farm Island, Alameda, Cal.
Rallus obsoletus. Saw two: one flew across a slough after
running for quite a ways along the edge of the grass; the
other bird I shot as it was swimming across a narrow
slough.
Gulls. Three or four large gulls. Shot a nearly adult Larus
californicus on the south side of Bay Farm Island.
Arenaria interpres. Four on south side of Bay Farm Island.
Squatarola helvetica. Common. Several black-bellied ones.
Regalecus semipalmatus. Several.
Numenius longirostris. Two for certain.
"Hudsonicus. Common.
Limosa fedoa. Three or four.
Symphebia semipalmata. Common.
Macrorhamphus gryseus. Several. Plumage, not full summer.
Strunga canutus. Saw about a dozen or more on
south side of island. Shot three which still showed
a good deal of red on the underparts.
Octodron Limonites minutilla. One. Although I saw
a great many sandpipers and shot over a dozen,
all were Eremetes fusillus with one exception.
Ardea herodias. Not uncommon, occurring singly.
Nycticorax nycticorax. A couple.
Buteo borealis. One over marsh. White rump patch
very distinct.
Several nights ago I saw an owl at the Corner of
Santa Clara Avenue and High Street, Alameda.
