Alameda, California.
This evening I saw three Nycticorax nyctic-
ora flying east from Lincoln Park. In Lincoln
Park I saw several Lophortyx californicus and
heard them calling.
April 12, 1909.
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
It was low tide this morning. On the sand
exposed near the eastern part of the mole
there were a good many small shore birds
and several large odes. There were also
a goodly concourse of gulls. Ardea herodias, one.
This evening when returning, I saw no
gulls on the piles or sheds on the San
Francisco side. Larus californicus (nearly
all adults) were common on the west side
of the bay; an occasional immature
Larus glabecens was seen. Off Goat
Island quite a number of Larus philadelphi
were seen hovering over drift; several many had black heads.
Along the mole the tide was high,
and I saw two bunches of ducks, one of
8 or 10, the other of about 20 or 25.
