In the backyard I saw the usual
horde of Passer domesticus this morning.
I also saw two or three Zonotrichia leucophrys.
Along the seawall and mole I saw
one or two gulls. Four or five flocks of
ducks were seen on the water, and one
or two Scamp Ducks and Clangula clangula
were seen close in shore. Along the
mole I saw several grebes; some were
Aechmophorus occidentalis. I saw a
cormorant come up out of the water
with a fish held obliquely in its
bill. I dried again almost immediately
February 11, 1909,
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
This morning I saw several small
flocks of ducks on the water along the
seawall and mole. One or two Scamp
Ducks and Clangula clangula were
seen close enough to be recognized.
I saw also a loon on the water. Several
Aechmophorus occidentalis were seen on the
water near the mole end of the pier.
Some dived as the train passed them,
making an arc clear of the water as
they did it.
This evening there were a great number
of gulls about the cruiser "Buffalo," as usual,
mostly Larus glaucescens, some Larus californicus.
